The Man from the Train: The Solving of a Century-Old Serial Killer Mystery is about a series of families who were murdered around the turn of the 20th century. Using old newspapers, Rachel traced the pattern most infamously seen in the 1912 massacre at the Moore family home in Villisca, Iowa to dozens of events spanning across the country, eventually identifying a strong suspect. The book is not just about a series of bloody murders, but about the lives and communities of ordinary families seeking better fates.

The Man from the Train was published in 2017 by Scribner. It was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime and won the 2018 Kansas Notable Book Award. A television adaptation is currently in the works.
